![]() ![]() Especially with Nintendo, who just use the word remake/remaster for marketing purposes rather than what's actually happening in development. I know this sounds like semantics, but these differences matter. Xenoblade DE is simply touched up cosmetically with additions - the core gameplay isn't just identical to the original, it literally is the original. Link's Awakening and Demon Souls both change movement enough, for example, that it's incomparable to the original on that metric alone. Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy 7 are remakes that completely change the original gameplay.īut games like Demon Souls, Link's Awakening, and MGS: Twin Snakes are also remakes because as true as they stay to the original, the original engine has enough substantial changes that the game is literally remade into a referential experience. A remaster is upgrading the original, whereas a remake is rebuilding the original fundamentally. Just because the changes to models and textures were changed a lot rather than a little doesn't push it into remake territory not even close. It enhances visuals, remastered the music, updated the UI, added QoL changes and added an epilogue. It is considered an expansive remaster, both by its developers and by (most) audiences. ![]() I don't think it straddles the line at all.
